From Street Vendor to Champion Coach: Ar Sy Shines at Esports World Cup in Riyadh
Filipino coach Ar Sy emerged as one of the most inspiring figures at the Esports World Cup (EWC) in Riyadh, showcasing a remarkable journey from the streets of Manila to the global stage. Rising from poverty through sheer determination and vision, Ar Sy’s path is a testament to perseverance and passion.
Ar Sy began his career selling food and sweets on the streets, using a wooden “tak-tak” tool, later moving on to sell sampaguita flowers. He eventually grew his small venture into a modest food cart business, preparing Filipino delicacies in his neighborhood. His skills in the kitchen led him to a role in a luxury hotel, where he joined the kitchen team despite lacking formal culinary training.
It was at this hotel that Ar Sy’s passion for esports took shape. He led his colleagues to victory in a workplace tournament, impressing participants with his tactical and leadership skills. This marked the beginning of his coaching career. He later moved to Myanmar, where he built an undefeated team that won the local championship and competed in two international tournaments.
Following his success in Myanmar, Ar Sy caught the attention of Team Liquid. He first joined them for the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League in the Philippines, quickly standing out for his unique coaching style. After several impressive showings, Team Liquid appointed him as technical director.
At the 2025 Esports World Cup, Ar Sy led Team Liquid to a historic second global title after winning the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Mid-Season Cup, becoming the first team to claim two EWC championships. In the final, Team Liquid dominated with a 4-1 win over the Selangor Red Giants, securing the $1 million first-place prize.
Speaking to the Saudi Press Agency, Ar Sy praised the organization of the EWC, calling it one of the best tournaments he has ever attended, both in terms of prize value and the detailed care given to players' experience.
