Threads of Faith Bind Calligraphy and Quranic Verses on the Holy Kaaba Kiswa
The Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba represents one of the most magnificent expressions of Islamic art, where Quranic verses and Arabic calligraphy are embroidered with gold and silver threads onto black silk, embodying the enduring heritage associated with honoring the Holy Kaaba.
The verses are embroidered using silver wires plated with 24-karat gold, following precise calligraphic patterns rooted in Islamic Arabic calligraphy, lending the Kiswa its unique aesthetic and spiritual character.
Thuluth script is among the most prominent calligraphic styles used, with verses and Islamic motifs distributed in geometric harmony across the cloth, the belt, and the curtain of the Kaaba's door. The embroidery process combines design, printing, weaving, and manual craftsmanship using gold and silver threads.
At the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa, the covering is produced annually by specialized national craftsmen, combining modern technologies with precise manual craftsmanship to the highest standards of quality, befitting the status of the Kaaba.
