Although Arabic is spoken by more than 400 million people and holds deep significance for nearly two billion Muslims as the language of the Holy Quran, its online presence remains disproportionately small. Arabic-language websites account for no more than 0.6% of global web pages, limiting the language's opportunities in artificial intelligence applications and natural language processing.
With global competition mounting to build national language models and strengthen digital sovereignty, interest is growing in enriching Arabic content and developing its linguistic resources as a foundation for ensuring the language keeps pace with technological shifts.
Head of the Linguistic Computing Sector at the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language (KSGAAL) Dr. Abdullah Al-Faifi said protecting Arabic in the digital age is no longer confined to preservation or awareness, but is tied to its ability to maintain an active presence in digital environments and AI technologies. He emphasized the need to produce reliable Arabic content, develop digital linguistic resources, qualify teachers and researchers, and build partnerships bringing together linguists, educators, and AI specialists.
Al-Faifi added that KSGAAL builds linguistic and knowledge infrastructure for AI applications, prepares digital dictionaries, establishes annotated text and voice corpora for training language models, and develops scientific standards for assessing AI application performance in Arabic.

Beyond serving as a medium of communication, the Arabic language remains a rich repository of heritage and inter-civilizational knowledge exchange. As digital transformation accelerates, scholars emphasize that the key challenge facing Arabic today is solidifying its presence within digital ecosystems so it continues to drive future knowledge production.
Speaking to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Secretary-General of the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo and Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Scientific Language Academies Dr. Abdulhamid Madkour stressed that preserving linguistic identity requires empowering Arabic across education, culture, and media, while utilizing translation to engage with global sciences.
Media and technology play a pivotal role in this transition. Experts like Cairo University's Dr. Othman Fikri and Fayoum University's Dr. Mohammed Hamed Egila noted that combining artificial intelligence with human review can enhance content quality, advance linguistic analysis, and protect heritage. They also highlighted Saudi Arabia's leading initiatives in supporting digital Arabic content.
On the international stage, Iraq's Permanent Delegate to UNESCO Dr. Asaad Swari and grammar expert Dr. Fadhil al-Samarrai told SPA that leveraging AI for real-time translation and modernizing teaching methods will ensure Arabic maintains its global influence and rhetorical richness across modern fields of knowledge.
Artificial Intelligence: Bridging Content Gaps and Unlocking Opportunities
Experts agree that the primary challenge facing Arabic in the AI era is not its linguistic capabilities, but its digital footprint and the quality of data available to train modern language models. Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Yemen to UNESCO Dr. Mohammed Jumeh estimated Arabic online content at between 1% and 3% of global content, limiting the efficiency of AI applications in comprehending Arabic despite recent advancements.
Vice President of the Jordanian Arabic Language Academy and former Minister of Education Dr. Ibrahim Badran stressed that empowering Arabic begins in schools and universities before extending to media and digital spaces, calling for enhanced translation, stronger Arabization, and unified scientific terminology across Arabic language academies.
Dr. Bassam Hammo of the University of Jordan emphasized that building comprehensive Arabic databases covering Classical Arabic, dialects, and scientific terminology is essential for developing more efficient AI applications, while stressing the continued importance of human review in specialized fields.
Arab efforts to advance Arabic in the digital age extend beyond tech infrastructure to building a specialized scientific workforce. Moroccan researcher Dr. Majdouline Nahibi highlighted that several Moroccan universities now offer joint programs in linguistics and AI to prepare qualified developers for Arabic language technologies.
Despite these opportunities, specialists warn against overreliance on automated tools. Dr. Yahya Al-Hashemi of the Mauritanian Observatory for the Arabic Language described AI as a "double-edged sword" that accelerates knowledge sharing but risks impairing young people's creative and writing skills. Echoing this, Lebanese academic Munir Al-Hafi emphasized that AI tools must support—not replace—the human mind, noting that current models fail to grasp cultural nuances and require human oversight. He also called for Arab investment in advanced language platforms in partnership with global tech firms, as well as including linguistic experts on software development teams.
Director of the Lebanese Center for Research and Consulting Dr. Hassan Qutub similarly cautioned that automated tools could erode writing proficiency, advocating for collaboration among linguists, engineers, and cultural institutions. Concurrently, Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts (Beït al-Hikma) President Dr. Raja Yassine Bahri framed the intersection of Arabic and AI as a historic opportunity, urging stronger academic-technological cooperation to build models capable of handling the complexities of Arabic and its dialects.

He stressed that building Arabic content requires a unified language policy, investment in education, media, and scientific research, and standardized terminology. True sovereignty, he noted, relies on possessing data, algorithms, and linguistic resources through measurable, actionable programs.
Highlighting Saudi Arabia as a leading model in digitally empowering the language, Secretary-General of the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo and Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Scientific Language Academies Dr. Abdulhamid Madkour called for joint regional initiatives to elevate Arabic across education, media, and digital platforms. Additionally, Dr. Mohammed Hamed Egila of Fayoum University advocated for broader Arab cooperation in digitizing heritage, teaching Arabic to non-native speakers, and leveraging AI to expand the language's global footprint.
