Knife Blacksmithing, Sharpening Flourishes in Jazan Ahead of Eid Al-Adha

Knife blacksmithing and sharpening, an ancient craft with a rich heritage, are experiencing a resurgence in popularity across Jazan's markets during the first 10 days of Dhu al-Hijjah, as Eid Al-Adha approaches.

Despite numerous challenges, blacksmiths remain resolute in preserving this craft and ensuring its traditions are passed down through generations.

Traditional markets throughout Jazan's various governorates, centers, and villages are witnessing remarkable activity in the blacksmithing and knife-sharpening professions. This vibrant activity plays an integral role in Eid preparations, with blacksmiths showcasing their artistic skills. Demand for slaughtering tools, particularly knives and cleavers used for meat preparation—an essential part of the popular "mahshoush" dish during Eid Al-Adha celebrations—is rising among citizens and residents who prefer to perform the ritual themselves.

The Saudi Press Agency documented the bustling activity of blacksmiths during field visits, observing them sharpening knives and skinning tools. Their presence is widespread in both regular markets and sheep markets, with some artisans moving between locations, demonstrating exceptional sharpening skills that attract customers.

This profession is more than just a craft; it is a vital part of the region’s rich cultural identity and a legacy carefully handed down through generations. These skills come alive every Eid Al-Adha, fostering a spirit of cooperation and social interaction within the community, thereby reinforcing Jazan’s cultural heritage.
