GEOSA Advances National Effort to Map and Document Two Holy Mosques and Holy Sites

The General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA), in cooperation with King Abdulaziz University, organized a workshop on the Atlas of the Two Holy Mosques and the Holy Sites project, with the participation of specialists, researchers, and experts in geospatial, historical, and scientific fields.

 GEOSA President Mohammed Alsayel described the project as a major leap in documenting geospatial information for the holiest sites, serving as an integrated national reference that preserves the historical, cultural, and religious heritage of the two holy mosques and the holy sites for future generations.

 The workshop reviewed the scientific methodology and achievements of the project's first phase, covering the inventory of landmarks, collection of historical sources, and utilization of geospatial databases, satellite imagery, and field visits.

 The project currently documents 623 sites and landmarks, including 315 in Madinah, 210 in Makkah, and 98 in the holy sites, producing more than 1,200 specialized scientific pages, over 300 identification cards, and more than 350 historical comparisons based on over 500 scientific references.
