Aseer’s Al-Yanfeh Archaeological Village Blends History and Contemporary Arts

The Aseer region’s archaeological village of Al-Yanfeh has evolved into more than just a historical site. Now a hub for contemporary arts, it seamlessly blends its 1,400-year history with modern expression, enhanced by restoration efforts over the past two years.

Located some 40 km southwest of Abha city, the over 121,000-square-meter village enjoys a prime location near other tourist attractions and King Khalid University. Major development and rehabilitation efforts by the Aseer Municipality have transformed Al-Yanfeh into a popular tourist destination and cultural center.

Its unique architecture features buildings terraced into the mountainside, overlooking an agricultural area irrigated by over 70 wells, including seven rock-carved wells. Visitors can also see the locals' skill in rock carving, exemplified by approximately 50 circular graves used for grain storage.

Ali Abu Alwa of the Saudi Heritage Preservation Society highlighted Al-Yanfeh's significance as a national tourist destination, citing its ancient cultural and heritage components, including unique houses and water channels. The village comprises 400 historic houses across 16 neighborhoods and six historical mosques, notably the old mosque built in 105 AH.

Ali Al-Ghathimi, the supervisor of the village development project, explained that Al-Yanfeh's red sandstone mountain, with its porous nature, facilitated well digging. At 2,600 meters above sea level, the village enjoys a moderate climate due to monsoon winds, with two annual rainy seasons.

Al-Ghathimi also noted the village's 36 ancient passages, built under buildings to connect neighborhoods.

Aseer Municipality's recent development project included rehabilitating passages and squares with stone cladding, installing period-appropriate lighting, and implementing agricultural improvements. A natural wood drainage system for rainwater was also installed.
