Norwegian Author Praises Walking Experience in Riyadh at Book Fair Session

Norwegian writer Erling Gjerdrum joined the Riyadh International Book Fair 2025, organized by the Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission, to discuss his book “Walking Step by Step” as part of the Book Talk series moderated by Sherine Abdelwahab.

During the session, Gjerdrum spoke about walking as one of life’s most vital activities, describing it as both a physical and mental exercise. “Walking stretches the body, brings in fresh air, calms the nerves, and strengthens memory,” he said. “It allows you to hear the sounds of nature, see the sun and the stars, and reconnect with the world around you.”

He emphasized that everyone can make time to walk, regardless of weather challenges — whether under the blazing sun or through thick snow. “Even when it’s tough, it’s a good kind of struggle that brings happiness and health,” he noted, calling walking a “free sport” that enriches both body and spirit.

Gjerdrum added that many of his creative ideas are inspired during his walks, describing the practice as a source of clarity and inspiration. He shared that he had explored Riyadh on foot during his visit, discovering the city’s unique charm and landscape.

Reflecting on his most demanding experience, Gjerdrum recalled a 50-day walk across the Arctic, covering 40 kilometers daily without any communication devices. “It was an extremely difficult but deeply rewarding journey — one of the most beautiful experiences of my life,” he said.
