Generation Z Chooses Philosophy and History at Riyadh International Book Fair 2025
Teenagers attending the Riyadh International Book Fair 2025 are showing a clear shift in reading preferences, with many opting for philosophy, history, and science books instead of comics and light fiction. The fair, running from October 2 to 11 at Princess Nourah University and hosting more than 2,000 publishers from around the world, has become a venue where younger readers are selecting titles once considered the domain of adults.
Publishers report that translated editions of Introduction to Philosophy, simplified versions of Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah, and books analyzing the rise and fall of civilizations are among the most sought-after titles by visitors aged 12 to 18. Biographies of innovators, scientists, and leaders are also in high demand.
“We did not expect this level of interest from teenagers,” said a sales manager at an Arab publishing house. “The majority of buyers for these books are young readers, and the trend has been consistent since the fair opened.” Other exhibitors confirmed similar sales patterns.
On the exhibition floor, young visitors explained their choices. Twelve-year-old Mohammed Al-Hamad chose a book on astronomy, saying: “Fantasy stories are enjoyable, but I want to know how the universe works.” Fifteen-year-old Noha Al-Qahtani purchased a Dostoevsky novel, commenting: “I want to understand the human mind.” Her father said he was surprised but proud of her interest.
Education and psychology specialists say the pattern reflects early engagement with complex ideas. “Children are asking more advanced questions at younger ages,” noted one child development expert. “Books provide a structured way to explore these subjects, and families can encourage that curiosity through dialogue.”
For publishers, the shift points to opportunities to expand content that combines depth with accessibility. Simplified philosophy, narrative biographies, and illustrated histories are seen as categories that could appeal to teenagers while broadening the reach of Arabic publishing globally.
The Riyadh International Book Fair 2025 is organized by the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission. It is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight and from 2 p.m. to midnight on Fridays. Alongside book displays, the fair hosts lectures, panel discussions, and appearances by regional and international authors, reinforcing its role as one of the Arab world’s largest cultural forums and supporting Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals of promoting knowledge and creativity.
