Makkah Road Projects Deliver Tangible Transformation in Traffic Efficiency, Safety
Makkah has undergone a significant transformation in its road sector, thanks to integrated projects implemented by the Royal Commission for Makkah City and the Holy Sites. These developments have markedly increased traffic efficiency and improved the quality of life, effectively keeping pace with rapid urban growth and facilitating access to the Grand Mosque and vital areas.
The development work included the completion and operation of the first, second, third, and fourth ring roads, which now form an interconnected network totaling over 105 kilometers in length. This network seamlessly links neighborhoods and main entrances, integrating with public transportation and smart parking systems. To enhance traffic safety, 49 smart pedestrian crossings were activated in vital locations, 14 critical traffic points within the city were addressed, and seven major intersections were completed.
Work on the Third Ring Road involved completing the Prince Miteb and Muzdalifah intersections and opening sections exceeding 10 kilometers long, including service roads and main bridges. The northern section of the road, extending 7.5 kilometers from the Tan'eem intersection to the Jamarat area, was also inaugurated, enhancing connectivity with the holy sites and increasing infrastructure readiness for peak seasons. Additionally, the Second Ring Road's 1.7-kilometer section from the Sulaymaniyah tunnels to Hussein Arab Street was finalized, including the operation of the intersection tunnel with the Masar destination, coordinated with the Ministry of Transport, the Holy Capital Municipality, and Umm Al-Qura company.
On the Fourth Ring Road, two new connections were opened in Al-Rayyan and Al-Khadhra neighborhoods to improve flow. The road’s connection to King Faisal Road was also completed, strengthening connectivity between main arteries. These comprehensive works have collectively contributed to an 86% increase in traffic safety.
