National Greening Program: Aseer’s Biodiversity Enhanced by Identification of 165 Native Plant Species

The National Greening Program has identified more than 165 native plant species suitable for afforestation in Aseer Region. This initiative supports national efforts to enhance vegetation cover and combat land degradation, aligned with the objectives of the Saudi Green Initiative. These efforts underscore the importance of planting native species adapted to diverse environments and advancing environmental sustainability, in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
According to the program, these species thrive in diverse habitats, including mountainous terrains, highlands, slopes, valleys, plains, the Red Sea coast, Tihama, and rocky areas. The native plants suitable for afforestation in Aseer encompass large and small trees, succulent and perennial shrubs, and a variety of herbs, bulbs, and vines.
The program promotes community participation in afforestation initiatives through partnerships with government, private, and non-profit sectors. These efforts emphasize environmental conservation, sustainability, and raising awareness about harmful practices while fostering a culture of volunteering among community members, in accordance with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
