Najran Leatherworking Transforms Traditional Craft into Economic Asset

Leatherworking is one of Najran's most prominent traditional crafts, embodying the region's authentic heritage, symbolizing its folk identity, and reflecting the skill of artisans who transform natural materials into exquisite products preserved across generations.

Najran leather is famously used to manufacture numerous traditional products, most notably the handles for Najrani daggers, baby carriers, and water containers prized for their natural cooling properties. It is also used for coffee and flour containers, as well as various food and luggage containers, blending authenticity with practicality.

Yahya Ayed, a local leather craftsman, explained that the process is meticulous, beginning with the collection of animal hides (cows, camels, goats), followed by cleaning, hair removal, tanning, and drying. The hides are then precisely cut and shaped into a range of traditional and contemporary designs.

Owing to their high quality, durability, and beautiful craftsmanship, Najran leather products enjoy widespread popularity and increasing demand, reinforcing their importance in supporting national handicrafts and aligning with Vision 2030's goal to empower traditional crafts as a vital contributor to the national economy and cultural heritage preservation.
