Harissa Festival Kicks Off in Nabeul, Celebrates Tunisian Culinary Icon

The city of Nabeul, located in the Cap Bon region of Tunisia, is hosting the 11th edition of the Harissa Festival, organized by the Nabeul City Preservation Association from October 17 to 19.

Harissa is one of the most prominent symbols of Tunisian culinary identity, found on nearly every table across the country. It is more than just a hot chili pepper paste; it is deeply rooted in the food and social memory, reflecting the spirit of diversity and local flavors that characterize Tunisian cuisine.

Traditionally, harissa is prepared from dried and ground red chili peppers mixed with olive oil, garlic, and local spices, creating a unique flavor. It is a key ingredient in many popular Tunisian dishes and is often served as a side.

The paste gained international recognition when it was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2022, acknowledging its cultural and social significance as a symbol of Tunisian heritage.

Organizers view the Harissa Festival as a valuable space for intergenerational encounters and an opportunity to highlight the role of women in preserving and transmitting this culinary heritage. The event also contributes to stimulating cultural tourism and supporting the traditional food industries in the region.
