GASTAT Releases 2024 Agricultural Statistics Publication
The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) released today its 2024 Agricultural Statistics Publication, revealing that date production in the Kingdom reached approximately 1,923 thousand tons in 2024, marking a 1% increase compared to 2023. The number of date palm trees exceeded 37.6 million, with more than 32 million of them being fruit-bearing.
The bulletin also showed that total grain production reached 1,651 thousand tons in 2024, with wheat accounting for 71.9% of this total, which is approximately 1,187 thousand tons, representing a 9.7% decrease compared to 2023.
The results showed that the area cultivated with open-field vegetables reached 89,700 thousand hectares, producing 2,745 thousand tons in 2024, an increase of 8.4% compared to 2023. Potatoes recorded the highest production volume at 624 thousand tons, followed by watermelons at approximately 612 thousand tons.
The production of greenhouse vegetables reached 797 thousand tons in 2024, an increase of 10.6% from 2023. The area cultivated totaled 7,800 hectares, while the number of greenhouses used for vegetable cultivation exceeded 121,000. Tomatoes recorded the highest production volume at 329 thousand tons, followed by cucumbers with more than 232 thousand tons.
The area of organic agriculture for perennial trees (excluding date palms) covered 12,500 hectares, accounting for 52% of the total cultivated area. This was followed by organic agriculture for date palm farming, covering approximately 6,200 hectares.
In 2024, total agricultural crop exports reached 506,000 tons, marking a 13% increase compared to 2023. Exports of fruits and edible nuts accounted for 72.1% of the total agricultural crop export volume for the year.
