Al-Baha's Muqana Bread Delights Visitors at Heritage Festival

Muqana bread, a staple of Al-Baha's heritage cuisine, remains a major attraction during the summer season as families in the cottage industry and local artisans prepare the traditional dish at markets and heritage festivals, drawing large crowds.

Recognized as the region's official dish by the Culinary Arts Commission, Muqana bread is known for its unique flavor and traditional preparation method. During the eighth Alatawelah Heritage Festival, visitors flocked to the Muqana bread pavilion to watch it being made.

According to traditional bread maker Ahmed Al-Shuyukh, the bread is made from wheat flour dough, flattened into a circular shape, and baked on a heated rock. It is then covered with a clay or metal lid and immersed in hot ash and embers until fully cooked. This ancient method gives the bread a distinct smoky flavor and crisp texture, and it is often served with ghee, honey, or yogurt.

The festival and its offerings are part of Al-Baha's efforts to support local artisans, preserve folk heritage, and promote cultural tourism.
