MEWA Emphasizes Arab Integration in Seed Production and Conservation for Food Security

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) has emphasized the importance of Arab integration in developing systems for the production, evaluation, and conservation of economic seeds, essential for sustaining agricultural resources and ensuring food security, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions that require innovative solutions and effective partnerships.

This emphasis was highlighted during a meeting with a delegation from the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD). The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation in conserving and evaluating plant genetic resources, potato cultivation, and techniques for fruit tree production, as well as exploring initiatives to bolster Arab food security.

The meeting reviewed the MEWA Seed Center's achievements in conserving plant genetic resources and advancing seed production technologies to improve quality and productivity. Opportunities for joint training and research programs with ACSAD were also considered to support sustainable agricultural development.

Both parties explored potential joint projects in high-quality seed production and modern agricultural technologies, aiming to strengthen cooperation in plant genetic evaluation and expertise exchange. This collaboration aims to enhance the capabilities of the Kingdom and other Arab nations in addressing food security challenges and improving agricultural productivity in the face of climate change.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to its leadership role in the Arab region by supporting specialized centers like the Seed Center, which is crucial for developing seed production systems, preserving genetic resources, and providing farmers with access to improved seedlings, thereby contributing to increased agricultural productivity and sustainability in line with Saudi Vision 2030 objectives.
