King Salman International Airport Signs MoU with MWAN to Enhance Operational Efficiency
King Salman International Airport (KSIA), a Public Investment Fund (PIF) company, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Center for Waste Management (MWAN), in the presence of Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Alfadley.
The MoU aims to establish a strategic cooperation framework to support integrated waste-management planning at the airport, enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory requirements. It also focuses on aligning efforts between the two sides in early planning, data exchange, regulatory compliance, and the development of waste reduction programs, as well as improving sorting and diversion rates across the design, construction, and operational phases of King Salman International Airport.
The MoU includes the formation of joint technical working teams, the development of a phased roadmap, and the exploration of innovation and circular economy opportunities related to large-scale aviation and infrastructure projects.
King Salman International Airport acting chief executive Marco Mejia stated that the MoU represents a pivotal step in embedding sustainability at the core of planning and operations at the airport, expressing his belief that integrated and responsible waste management is a fundamental pillar in developing a future-ready global airport.
For his part, MWAN Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Al-Sebaei affirmed that the partnership reflects the center’s role in supporting major national projects and advancing the implementation of best practices in waste management and the circular economy, in line with the Kingdom’s environmental directions.
The MoU comes as part of King Salman International Airport’s efforts to strengthen sustainability practices through reliance on renewable energy, pursuing net-zero emissions, and applying best practices in resource and waste management, contributing to enhanced environmental performance and reinforcing its position as a world-class airport in accordance with the highest environmental standards.
KSIA is a strategic and transformative national project that reflects the Kingdom’s ambition to position Riyadh as a global capital and a leading aviation hub.
The airport is located on the existing site of King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and will include the King Khalid terminals, in addition to three new terminals, residential and leisure assets, six runways, and logistics facilities. Spanning 57 square kilometers, it is designed to accommodate 100 million passengers annually and handle more than 2 million tons of cargo per year by 2030.
