The craft of palm frond weaving in Najran Region is one of the most prominent and popular traditional crafts that reflects the local cultural heritage and customs. It remains present today in various occasions and celebrations as tools for serving hospitality and food, maintaining its material and heritage value despite the development of household items and the availability of modern options.
Among the products made from palm fronds is what is locally known as "Al-Matarah," made from palm fronds and used as serving vessels in gatherings and reception salons in the region. These are used to serve dates, nuts, raisins, sweets, as well as traditional dishes like Mardoufah, Al-Raqash, and Tannour bread.
Saleh Abdullah, a vendor at one of the heritage shops in the city of Najran, explained that palm frond products are among the traditional crafts in the region that enjoy significant demand throughout the year, including during holidays and weddings, due to their use in serving hospitality and traditional dishes known in the region. He also pointed out that the process of making Al-Matarah involves gathering and drying the palm fronds, after which the product is shaped according to the required size.
