Saudi Arabia's Development Initiatives Strengthen Economic Stability Across Yemen
In the first quarter of 2026, the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) significantly advanced Yemen's stability through an integrated economic approach.
A recent SAR1.9 billion development package launched in January, featuring 28 high-quality projects across electricity, transport, health, education, and water, has added to the 268 initiatives implemented since 2018, reinforcing the Kingdom's total support exceeding $12.6 billion between 2012 and 2026.
Economic stability was bolstered by SAR1.3 billion provided to the Yemeni budget this quarter to cover operational expenses and salaries. In the energy sector, Saudi oil derivative grants continued to power over 70 generation plants, ensuring the continuity of essential services in hospitals and schools. Infrastructure milestones included new phases of Al-Abr road and upgrades to Aden International Airport, enhancing regional connectivity and trade.
Healthcare and education remained top priorities. SDRPY undertook urgent interventions to fully operationalize hospitals in Socotra, Shabwa, and Mocha. In education, an agreement with the Social Fund for Development initiated five model schools in Marib, Lahj, Al Dhale'a, Shabwa, and Abyan—part of a larger plan for 30 schools nationwide. Additionally, a rural education access project entered its second phase, aiming to train 450 female teachers across six governorates.
International partnerships with the EU, UNESCO, and the World Bank have amplified these efforts. A notable strategic collaboration with the EU includes a SAR9 million project to enhance water security in Marib. Complementing these are agricultural programs for food security and community initiatives, including multi-governorate sports tournaments and cultural celebrations like Socotri Language Day, all paving a path toward a sustainable Yemeni recovery.
