Plantago ovata Carpets Northern Borders Region Deserts in Spring Bloom

Northern Borders Region is one of the largest grazing areas in the Kingdom, known for its diverse annual wild grazing plants, most notably Plantago ovata, which spreads across vast areas of the region's deserts during spring. It is beneficial for camels and sheep and boosts milk production, and is a plant favored by Bedouin communities for grazing their livestock, adding greenery to the region's plains.

Plantago ovata is a small annual herbaceous plant with numerous narrow linear leaves of parallel lengths connected to the base of the stem. Its leaves are grayish-green and usually covered with fine, small hairs. Its spread reflects the rich biodiversity of Northern Borders Region's lands, particularly during spring when wild plant growth is most active.

Bedouin communities historically used Plantago ovata widely in traditional medicine. It grows at the end of winter and the beginning of spring in moderately cool temperatures, thriving in loose sandy soil.
