NCVC Dispersing 20 Tons of Seeds to Rehabilitate 15,000 Hectares of Natural Rangelands
The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development & Combating Desertification (NCVC) successfully implemented a comprehensive plan to rehabilitate natural rangelands across 15 locations in 7 regions across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The initiative utilizes modern equipment to enhance vegetation cover, preserve soil, improve its quality, and mitigate negative impacts on the environment.
The plan targets rehabilitating over 15,000 hectares of natural rangelands by dispersing more than 20 tons of carefully selected, viability-tested seeds from 37 plant species. The ambitious initiative will utilize over 50 pieces of specialized equipment for plowing, sapling planting, rainwater harvesting, filtering, purifying, sorting, and collecting processes to ensure effective land restoration.
Several locations across Saudi Arabia were selected, including protected areas, rangelands, and floodplains in regions like Al-Jouf, Riyadh, Al-Qassim, Madinah, and Hail. The selection was based on rigorous criteria.
Following the rehabilitation phase, the NCVC will initiate a follow-up and evaluation process to monitor seasonal changes, vegetation cover, and density. This phase will also include soil analysis and environmental mapping using advanced technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), aerial imaging, and remote sensing to track the distribution of vegetation cover.
The NCVC remains committed to developing, protecting, and monitoring vegetation cover sites throughout the Kingdom. Its efforts include rehabilitating degraded areas, identifying encroachment, combating illegal logging, and overseeing the sustainable management of rangelands, forests, and national parks. The initiatives play a vital role in promoting sustainable development and achieving the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative.
