GCC Secretary-General: First GCC-China Forum on Peaceful Nuclear Technology Marks Key Step in Cooperation

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi affirmed that the first GCC-China Forum on the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology represents a valuable opportunity to enhance joint cooperation and exchange best practices in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, emphasizing that the forum underscores the importance of the relationship between the GCC countries and China.
In his speech at the opening of the forum today in Chengdu, China, attended by China's Atomic Energy Authority Director Shan Zhongde, Albudaiwi noted that the first forum on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy between the two sides is part of implementing the outcomes of the inaugural GCC-China Summit for Cooperation and Development, held in December 2022 in Riyadh.
Albudaiwi said: “Anyone looking into GCC-Chinese relations will clearly see the depth of this historical relationship, especially as it witnessed an important milestone with the convening of the first summit between the leaders of the GCC states and Chinese President Xi Jinping. During this summit, the joint action plan for 2023-2027 was approved to advance common goals and mutual interests. This is further reinforced by the distinguished relations between the GCC states and China.”
He pointed out substantial opportunities for cooperation and knowledge exchange between both sides in various sectors, including nuclear medicine, water desalination, and the industrial applications of nuclear technology, especially as the GCC countries have made tangible strides in benefiting from the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
Albudaiwi also highlighted the numerous efforts made by the GCC countries, in cooperation with the international community, to ensure the peaceful use of nuclear energy, particularly in the Middle East.
In concluding his remarks, he expressed hope that this forum would contribute to establishing effective cooperation mechanisms that enhance the ability to address future challenges in innovative and safe ways.
