Prophet’s Mosque Doors: A Timeless Masterpiece Reflecting Centuries of Craftsmanship and Care

The 100 doors of the Prophet’s Mosque are among the most prominent symbols of the continuous care the mosque has received throughout the ages.

They are distinguished by elegant design, intricate detail, and precise craftsmanship, offering both majestic presence and smooth functionality. They reflect a welcoming spirit to all, regardless of appearance or language, embodying Islamic values of openness and peace.

The doors are unique examples of Islamic art, showcasing elaborate decoration and distinctive engravings that reflect the architectural identity of the mosque.

Among the most notable are the doors constructed during the expansion project of the late Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdulaziz. Designed to the highest international standards, this expansion includes seven main entrances—three on the northern side, and two each on the eastern and western sides.

Each entrance branches into seven large doors: two positioned apart, with five placed adjacent in between.

Each door measures 3 meters in width and 6 meters in height, has a thickness exceeding 13 centimeters, and weighs approximately 1.25 tons. Despite their size, the doors can be opened and closed easily with one hand, thanks to a special mechanism that ensures high flexibility in use.

The doors were crafted from over 1,600 cubic meters of premium teak wood. Each incorporates more than 1,500 gold-plated copper pieces engraved with a circular design bearing the name “Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah Almighty.” The manufacturing process spanned several countries: the gold-plated copper was polished in France; the wood was sourced and assembled in the United States; it was dried in specialized ovens in Barcelona, Spain, over five months; and later laser-cut, polished, gold-plated, and assembled using traditional interlocking techniques without nails.

With their artistic richness, the doors of the Prophet’s Mosque remain a symbol of enduring Islamic identity—an iconic feature blending the fragrance of history with the splendor of the present.
