Arees Well: A Historical Landmark Linked to the Prophet's Life

Arees Well, some 38 meters west of the Quba Mosque, is one of the oldest, dating back to pre-Islamic times, and has historical significance.

It gained fame for being mentioned in the Prophetic biography (hadith). According to the hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) drank water from the well, sat on its edge, soaked his feet in it, and performed ablution using its water.

In the sixth year of his Caliphate, Caliph Uthman ibn Affan accidentally dropped the Caliphate ring in the well. Later it was named Bir Al-Khatam (Well of the Ring). This ring was the one that the Prophet Muhammad used to wear.

According to Yasser Al-Hujayli, a historian specializing in the history of Madinah, the Quba area is an important historical and archaeological site linked to the Prophet Muhammad’s life. The first mosque in Islam was built there, and the area features several significant landmarks, such as "Wadi Buthan", Masjid al-Jummah, and Arees Well.

Madinah Region Development Authority is working to develop and revive 57 historical sites surrounding the Quba Mosque, including wells, farms, and orchards in the mosque courtyards.
