KFSH Successfully Applies Advanced Fertility-Preserving Technique to Treat Adenomyosis
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH) has successfully applied a fertility-preserving surgical technique, used for the first time in the Middle East, to treat adenomyosis, marking a major advancement in reproductive surgery. The procedure enabled surgeons to remove diseased tissue while preserving the uterus in a patient who had suffered recurrent miscarriages and difficulty conceiving, ultimately leading to a successful pregnancy after treatment with IVF, and the birth of a healthy baby. The mother was later discharged in stable condition.
The technique involves removing adenomyotic tissue from the muscular wall of the uterus while preserving the uterine lining, followed by precise reconstruction of the uterine wall to improve future pregnancy outcomes. The approach is designed to strike a delicate balance between removing affected tissue and preserving fertility, unlike some conventional treatments that focus mainly on symptom relief or may affect a woman’s ability to conceive.
Adenomyosis is a complex condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. It can cause severe menstrual pain, heavy or prolonged bleeding, and chronic pelvic pain, and in some cases may affect fertility and the ability to maintain pregnancy. As a result, surgical treatment for the condition is considered among the more technically challenging procedures in reproductive and fertility-preserving surgery.
The procedure was carried out through a scientific collaboration between KFSH’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Department and the University of British Columbia, as part of the hospital’s ongoing efforts to advance specialized medical practices and adopt innovative treatment technologies that enhance care for complex cases.
