Esports World Cup Opens New Global Qualification Pathways for 2027 Edition
The Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) announced the launch of the "2027 EWC Qualifier Program," a partnership initiative under the "Road to EWC" that enables tournament organizers and local esports communities worldwide to host official qualifying competitions. The new program marks a significant expansion of Road to EWC, which aims to reach 1.8 million players through more than 400 tournaments in 2027.
By linking leagues organized by game publishers, international tournaments, and regional qualifiers, Road to EWC unites existing competitive ecosystems under a single global championship umbrella. The new qualifier program will further strengthen these connections while providing players with more local opportunities to begin their competitive journeys in their communities.
"Road to EWC has shown what is possible when the different pathways across competitive esports connect to one global destination," said EWCF Chief Product Officer Faisal Bin Homran.
"There are great tournaments and strong esports communities in every part of the world. By bringing more of them into Road to EWC, we can create more opportunities for players to compete in their own communities and give local esports ecosystems an official role in building the pathway to the Esports World Cup," he said.
The EWC Qualifier Program offers two partner-operated routes, bringing established competitions and grassroots tournaments into Road to EWC.
The first route, EWC Direct Qualifiers, aims to expand the existing connection between established esports tournaments and Road to EWC. Organizers will continue to operate and fund their competitions under their own identities, retain local commercial opportunities, meet EWC and publisher standards, and provide players with an official pathway to the Esports World Cup.
The second route, EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers, aims to create new opportunities for local communities worldwide to organize competitions connected to the Esports World Cup. Focusing on grassroots participation, the program allows local tournament organizers, federations, associations, cybercafés, universities, esports venues, and gaming festivals to apply. They can connect existing competitions or establish new tournaments under their own identities, with marketing support from EWCF.
Winners will earn guaranteed entry into the relevant EWC Last Chance Qualifier tournaments next summer, where they will compete for a place in the EWC Main Event. Accommodation and visa support will also be provided. The EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers will initially be available for Chess, Counter-Strike 2, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves, and Street Fighter 6, with more games to be announced.
Both the Direct Qualifiers and Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers routes will operate in accordance with publisher requirements and EWC competitive standards, including rulesets, anti-cheat measures, officiating, and verified results. Together, the two routes aim to create a stronger global esports ecosystem, more meaningful competitions, and more opportunities for players.
The additional qualification pathways have already demonstrated their value at EWC through Last Chance Qualifiers, which quickly became an important and dramatic part of the event. João "jafonsogv" Vasconcelos progressed through the EA SPORTS FC Last Chance Qualifier before becoming EWC champion in 2024. His success inspired others and led to the creation of the Jafonso Award to recognize that accomplishment.
Applications for the 2027 EWC Direct Qualifiers and Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers program are now open and will close on December 20, 2026. Approved events are scheduled to conclude by June 1, 2027, ahead of the EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers for EWC 2027.
