GAC Participates in UN Conference on Competition and Consumer Protection in Geneva

The General Authority for Competition (GAC), represented by CEO Dr. Fahad Alshathri, participated in the ninth session of the United Nations Conference on Competition and Consumer Protection, organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.

During the conference, Dr. Alshathri delivered a speech highlighting the Authority’s role in promoting fair competition in the Kingdom, which contributes to enhancing market efficiency and fostering a dynamic and equitable economic environment. He emphasized the Authority’s collaboration with public and private sector partners in supporting the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, aimed at building a globally competitive economy and a business-friendly environment.

Dr. Alshathri stressed that rapid changes in the global economy necessitate a balanced approach to implementing competition policies—one that ensures flexibility and effectiveness in addressing emerging challenges while maintaining a fair balance between innovation, economic growth, and the safeguarding of competitive practices.

In a panel discussion titled “Competition and Regional Economic Organizations,” Dr. Alshathri underscored the importance of regional cooperation, particularly through the Arab Competition Network (ACN). He pointed to the strategic advantages of cross-border collaboration, such as knowledge exchange and the development of integrated and credible enforcement mechanisms that strengthen the role of competition policy as a tool for development and consumer protection across the region.

The Authority’s participation reflects its commitment to bolstering the Kingdom’s global presence in the field of competition and consumer protection and reaffirms its adherence to international best practices that promote transparency, equality, and innovation in the national economy.
