Sadu Weaving Inspires Women's Fashion in Al-Jouf Region
The Al-Jouf Region is known for its skilled artisans who practice various crafts, thanks to the region's natural resources that provide essential materials. The designation of 2025 as the Year of Handicrafts in Saudi Arabia offers an opportunity to showcase the prominent crafts of the region.
Sadu products hold a special place in Al-Jouf, especially in fashion design. Craftswomen in the region incorporate Sadu into abayas, crafting decorative elements for sleeves, midsections, and sides, particularly during notable national events like Founding Day and National Day celebrations.
Sadu weaving involves the use of traditional tools, including a ground-stretched wooden loom. This apparatus enables craftswomen to create Sadu products in varying lengths. The process begins with wool threads from livestock, which are spun and dyed. Some artisans use natural dyes extracted from rocks in Al-Jouf, mixed with water to create vibrant colors for dyeing the wool threads. Others opt for dyes derived from wild plants collected during the spring season.
