High-level International Participation in 11th UNAOC Global Forum in Riyadh
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's hosting of the 11th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) embodies the symbolism of convening the forum in a land of great religious significance, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the establishment of UNAOC.
The remarks came during the secretary-general's address at the opening of the forum, which began today at King Faisal Conference Hall in Riyadh, under the presidency of Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, with broad international participation by leaders, officials, and representatives of international organizations.
Guterres stressed that the world is facing a crossroads between division and dialogue, emphasizing that building bridges between cultures and religions requires political courage and represents the only path toward achieving sustainable peace, calling for ending violence in conflict areas and empowering youth and women in peace processes.
UN Under-Secretary-General, High Representative for UNAOC and UN Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia Miguel Ángel Moratinos underscored the importance of boosting communication among peoples and combating Islamophobia. He highlighted the role of digital innovation and investment in youth in driving positive change, as well as the need to improve the conditions of women and children and enhance their participation in public life.
Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration of Spain Elma Saiz Delgado stressed that equality between women and girls and listening to all voices constitute fundamental pillars for achieving true multilateralism. She highlighted her country’s commitment to supporting the principles of UNAOC and promoting a culture of respect and peace, particularly in light of global humanitarian challenges.
Former Prime Minister and former Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Binali Yildirim stressed that UNAOC is not a slogan but a necessity to confront hatred and ignorance, calling for translating dialogue into tangible action through education, responsible media, and the participation of youth and women.
