SDRPY, Alawn Foundation Sign Agreement to Implement Phase Two of Rural Education Access Project
The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) and Alawn Foundation for Development signed an agreement to implement the second phase of the Rural Education Access Project. The phase aims to increase the number of beneficiaries to 450. It expands the targeted governorates to six: Hadramout, Al-Mahrah, Marib, Taiz, Lahj, and Shabwah.
The second phase builds on the first phase, which qualified 150 young women to teach in public schools. The participants obtained teaching diplomas from Yemen’s Ministry of Education. They were also equipped with essential life and professional skills.
The project supports the sustainability of education in rural areas. It aims to improve educational performance and increase girls’ enrollment in public education across the targeted governorates.
The initiative forms part of SDRPY’s broader support for general and higher education, as well as technical and vocational training. Efforts include establishing and equipping model schools, building colleges and institutes, and developing universities. Projects include constructing and equipping three colleges of medicine, pharmacy, and nursing at Taiz University. They also include development projects at Aden University, such as equipping 28 laboratories in pharmacology, biotechnology, and chemistry, in addition to Yemen’s first forensic laboratory of its kind. The program has also supported the expansion and development of Sheba Region University.
Additional initiatives include qualifying 200 male and female teachers to obtain internationally recognized professional teaching certifications. Recently announced projects include establishing two colleges of computer science and information technology at Hadramout University and Seiyun University, establishing the College of Applied and Health Sciences in Al-Mahrah, and building a technical institute and College of Education in Socotra. The program also supports access to education through constructing and equipping model schools across Yemen as part of comprehensive and sustainable development efforts.
SDRPY has delivered 268 development projects and initiatives across eight core sectors: education, health, water, energy, transport, agriculture and fisheries, support for Yemeni government capacities, and development programs. These projects span various Yemeni governorates.
