SDAIA Study Discloses Revolution of Artificial General Intelligence
A study by the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA) revealed that the world is entering a crucial phase in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies marked by the emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI), which presents significant opportunities in automation, economic growth, and scientific discovery.
The study outlines global trends in AGI regulation and discusses how these technologies could transform development, the economy, and healthcare. Titled "Foresight on the Governance of Artificial General Intelligence: Current Landscape and Future Prospects," the study examines the foundational concepts of AGI and explores initiatives for its governance. It also emphasizes ongoing efforts to develop frameworks for AGI in Saudi Arabia and worldwide.
According to the study, AGI represents a level of AI expected to perform tasks similarly to humans, raising concerns about rapid advancements without adequate regulation. With the right strategies in place, experts believe AGI could drive breakthroughs in scientific innovation and economic prosperity. Significant investments such as OpenAI’s Stargate project in the United States illustrate growing global commitment, with approximately $500 billion allocated for AGI development.
The study categorizes AGI alongside artificial narrow intelligence and artificial superintelligence, emphasizing the need for coordinated regulatory efforts due to varied international approaches and the absence of specific frameworks for AGI regulation.
Experts predict differing timelines for AGI realization, with some anticipating it by 2030 and others projecting it between 2040 and 2060.
Saudi Arabia, the study added, is noted for its advanced digital infrastructure and is actively developing regulatory frameworks aligned with global trends to promote the safe and responsible use of AI technologies, reflecting its commitment to harnessing AI’s potential.
