Environment Ministry Signs Contract for Water Resource Management and Flood Mitigation

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) has signed a contract for a project aimed at utilizing ground and surface water resources and implementing flood risk mitigation initiatives. The project aims to enhance the management and development of water resources, conserve non-renewable groundwater, and safeguard it against depletion, waste, and pollution. It also contributes to achieving water security by advancing a safe and sustainable water sector.

Deputy Minister for Water at MEWA Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Shaibani stated that the project is part of the ministry’s efforts to enhance the efficiency of non-renewable water resources by monitoring and regulating drilling and production activities, rationalizing usage, identifying safe water sources, and supporting their development. It also aims to maximize the use of surface and renewable water by applying the best international practices.

Al-Shaibani added that the project provides integrated services, including conducting studies and designs for rainwater harvesting projects (such as dams, water barriers, and ponds), as well as valley and watershed studies, and flood risk mitigation. It also involves reviewing various studies, supporting project implementation, continuous monitoring and evaluation of water sources, and preparing field and technical reports.

Launching this service aligns with the goals of the National Water Strategy, which aims to develop the sector by improving water demand management, enhancing usage efficiency, preserving the environment, and enabling private sector participation, in line with the Saudi Vision 2030.
