UNRWA Commissioner Praises Saudi Arabia's Efforts in Supporting Two-State Solution, Resolving Gaza Conflict
Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini praised Saudi Arabia, during closed consultations at the UN Security Council, for its collaborative efforts with the European Commission and the Arab League in supporting the two-state solution and assisting in the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip following the recent ceasefire agreement.
He said that this global alliance marks a crucial step toward a comprehensive political transition, which includes transferring UNRWA services to empowered Palestinian institutions, ensuring both regional stability and the protection of Palestinian rights.
He also stressed the importance of fully implementing the ceasefire agreement and removing barriers to humanitarian access, saying that UNRWA is working to resume education and primary health care services, expand aid efforts, and has developed a comprehensive 60-day plan aimed at increasing aid deliveries to 500-600 trucks per day, up from 40-50 trucks per day in recent months.
Lazzarini warned against Israeli legislation that threatens to halt UNRWA's operations, emphasizing that its implementation would exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and intensify the suffering of Gaza's residents, hundreds of thousands of whom rely on the agency’s essential services. He also noted that this move would undermine the ceasefire agreement and hinder reconstruction efforts.
He urged the international community to provide urgent financial support to UNRWA to prevent the disruption of its life-saving services and to counter Israeli legislation that threatens the future of Palestinians and erodes their trust in the international community. He stressed that sustaining humanitarian efforts in Gaza requires collective action to ensure stability and work toward peace.
