From Diriyah to Jeddah: The Birth of Formula E in Saudi Arabia

From the open spaces of Diriyah to the shores of Jeddah, a new era in motorsport has emerged, adding a distinctive chapter to the Kingdom’s sporting landscape. The historic landmarks, towering palms, ancient neighborhoods, and rich cultural heritage are not merely echoes of the past but stepping stones toward a dream that has reached the world stage.
The Kingdom’s motorsport journey took a groundbreaking turn in 2018 with the launch of the first Formula E race, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy. Diriyah became an iconic destination for this event, offering a backdrop that blended heritage with innovation and a track that embodied the aspirations of a new era.
The Formula E series faced an unexpected pause in 2020 due to the global pandemic, but the passion for the sport returned with even greater intensity in 2021 when Diriyah hosted the first-ever night race in Formula E history.
As major development projects in Diriyah progressed, organizers envisioned a new chapter for the race, leading to the decision to host the seventh edition of Formula E at a different venue. The Jeddah Corniche Circuit was selected as the new home for the Jeddah E-Prix, embracing the spirit of clean energy and reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s sustainability goals.
