Wall Volleyball: A Rare Hobby Revived by Al-Furaih and His Team
For those passionate about their hobbies, little can stand in their way—especially when it involves an unconventional sport like wall volleyball. This unique game has captivated Yazid Al-Furaih, founder of the "Wall Volleyball Club," an affiliate of the "Hawi" national hobby platform, part of the Quality of Life Program under Saudi Vision 2030.
Al-Furaih describes wall volleyball as similar to traditional volleyball, with distinct twists. The primary difference is the use of walls, which are integral to gameplay. Usually played in squash courts, wall volleyball matches consist of two teams of four players, with a net positioned at a height of 2.45 meters, adding an extra layer of strategy and excitement.
A Serendipitous Discovery
Al-Furaih recounts how he stumbled upon the sport while studying for a master’s degree in the United States: “One day, while exploring the campus, I noticed some students playing this intriguing game. Curiosity got the better of me, so I joined in—and I was immediately hooked. It soon became a highlight of my weekly routine with friends.”
Reflecting on the sport’s recognition in Saudi Arabia, Al-Furaih shares, “Currently, I doubt many people in the Gulf or the Middle East know about wall volleyball. It’s quite popular in the U.S. and Canada. After returning home, I tried to find information on it, but there was a lack of resources in both Arabic and English.”
Overcoming Obstacles with Determination
The rarity of wall volleyball in the region inspired Al-Furaih to establish a club on the "Hawi" platform. He explains, “The idea for the club emerged from the difficulties we encountered in practicing our passion locally. A major obstacle was finding suitable venues. Riyadh has limited squash courts, and those available are often inaccessible to the public. Initially, the club was just me, some fellow students, and a few friends.”
Since its founding on "Hawi," the club has seen steady growth, with new members joining regularly, particularly on game days.
The Role of "Hawi" in Promoting Hobbies
Al-Furaih highlights the essential role "Hawi" plays in nurturing hobby clubs throughout the Kingdom. “Hawi provides crucial resources, from promoting clubs and engaging new members to helping us secure the necessary spaces and equipment. They also assist with media exposure, all of which contributes significantly to the growth of wall volleyball as a hobby.”
An Accessible and Thrilling Sport for All
Al-Furaih and his team hope to popularize wall volleyball across Saudi Arabia, showcasing its accessibility and appeal to people of all ages and fitness levels. Through "Hawi," they aim to encourage facility owners to support and invest in this sport by developing courts specifically suited for wall volleyball.
This initiative aligns with the Quality-of-Life Program under Saudi Vision 2030, underscoring the importance of unique, engaging activities that contribute to community vitality and enhance quality of life across the Kingdom.
