Beyond Aesthetics: Experts Highlight Major Health, Environmental Benefits of Indoor Plants
Indoor plants have become a fundamental element of interior design, transforming homes and offices by adding a vibrant, natural character that enhances tranquility, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.
Beyond aesthetics, these plants offer significant health and environmental benefits. Dr. Nahed Rashid, professor of ornamental plants at King Faisal University, explained that indoor plants purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds, such as formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene, emitted from paints, furniture, and cleaners. To maintain their health, she recommends placing plants in adequate, indirect sunlight, watering moderately, dusting leaves, and fertilizing during the growing season.
From a psychological perspective, Dr. Montaser Mohammed, associate professor of mental health at King Faisal University, emphasized that indoor plants promote relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and enhance cognitive focus. Studies show they can also help lower blood pressure and combat mental fatigue.
Local nurseries and online stores in Eastern Region are experiencing growing demand for green spaces, reflecting a rising public awareness aligned with Saudi Vision 2030's focus on environmental sustainability. Among the most popular requested varieties are the Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily), Spider Plant, Rubber Plant, Sansevieria, and various cacti like Aloe Vera.
