Umm Al-Qura University Develops Research Satellite to Monitor Space Weather and Solar Radiation Impact

The “Ufoq (Horizon)” team at Umm Al-Qura University has developed a satellite designed to monitor space weather and study the impact of solar radiation on timing and navigation systems, marking a significant scientific milestone. The team, made up of four female students, won the SARI competition organized by the Saudi Space Agency.

The small satellite is intended to observe, analyze, and better understand how space weather phenomena affect navigation and timing signals. Its data will contribute to early warning systems in the event of disruptions, supporting relevant sectors and entities. The project will also advance Saudi academic research in space weather by generating local data and enhancing scientific understanding through analysis of satellite-collected data.
