From Gyrfalcons to Peregrines: Distinctive Traits of Falcon Species at International Falcon Breeders Auction
The falcons showcased at this year's International Falcon Breeders Auction, organized by the Saudi Falcons Club (SFC) in Malham, north of Riyadh, include a variety of species and categories, including Gyrfalcons, Peregrines, Sakers, and hybrids. Each has distinctive characteristics in terms of size, color, build, and performance. These traits attract falconers when identifying and selecting falcons suited to their needs and purposes.
A representative of a local farm participating in the auction Samer Dhiab Al-Sulaimi explained that Gyrfalcons are distinguished by their large size, strong build, and diverse coloration, ranging from white and gray to darker shades. He noted that breeding farms work to develop different lines based on targeted traits for each production line.
He added that Peregrines are known for their speed, streamlined build, and pointed wings, making them particularly valued by falconers for their flight and diving capabilities. Sakers, meanwhile, are distinguished by their powerful build and longstanding status among falconers, as well as their deep-rooted association with falconry and hunting in the region.
Al-Sulaimi noted that breeding farms do not focus solely on pure species, but also produce hybrids that combine traits from more than one species. These include categories commonly found among falconers and in falcon competitions, such as Gyr-Peregrine hybrids and Mathlouth Al-Gyr. Through selective breeding lines, producers seek to develop specific traits related to speed, size, color, or performance.
He explained that differences among falcons extend beyond species or category names, as falconers also consider the breeding line, the individual traits of each falcon, its family’s performance record, and the purpose for which it is acquired, particularly given the differing specifications sought for racing falcons and other forms of falconry.
The auction provides falconers and enthusiasts with an opportunity to view various falcon species and categories in one location, learn about the production of local and international farms, and explore their experiences in selective breeding and developing production lines. The auction will continue through August 25.
