Traditional Date Preservation Keeps AlUla’s Heritage Alive

“Al-Shannah” and “Al-Majlad” remain traditional methods used in AlUla to preserve dates. Over generations, they have become an integral part of the agricultural and culinary practices associated with the date harvest in the governorate.
Al-Shannah is made from animal hides. It is used to store dates for long periods while maintaining their freshness. Al-Majlad is crafted from palm fronds. It protects dates from environmental factors and facilitates easier transport.
These practices reflect AlUla’s rich agricultural heritage and the community’s close bond with the date palm. They continue to be used alongside modern preservation methods. This helps pass traditional skills to new generations and ensures the sustainability of this cultural legacy.
