'Red Wind, Coral Worlds': An Artistic Journey into Red Sea's Living Memory in Jeddah

For more than five months, the exhibition "Red Wind, Coral Worlds" at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah offered an artistic space to explore the Red Sea's cultural and civilizational memory. The exhibition spotlighted the human connections forged across the Red Sea's shores through centuries of trade, migration, and Hajj journeys. Blending contemporary art with historical research and creative practices, it offered a rich experience that contributed to the city's cultural scene.
Organized by Art Jameel as part of its Hayy Arts exhibitions, the exhibition closed at the end of October. It offered an artistic interpretation of the Red Sea as a meeting point of civilizations and a crossroads of cultural exchange linking Jeddah, East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Indian Ocean. It also explored the tangible and intangible traces left by centuries of human connection, while drawing attention to the coastal and coral environments that bear witness to the region's social and environmental history.
Curated by Huda Tayob and Miriam Hillawi Abraham, the exhibition featured a diverse range of works, including art installations and archival materials. It offered sensory experiences using sound, scent, and texture to evoke memories of place and explore the relationship between tangible and intangible heritage. The participating artistic practices also highlighted the value of knowledge passed down through generations in documenting human experiences and reinterpreting them through a contemporary creative lens.
The exhibition's cultural program extended beyond the artworks, featuring panel discussions and educational activities exploring how migration and cultural exchange have shaped artistic practices, as well as the relationship between memory and material traces. The program "As Told by the Land," inspired by the two exhibitions presented at Hayy Jameel, invited children and young people to explore the history of places and how they have changed through experimentation, documentation, and creative expression. In its final days, the exhibition also hosted the "Red Wind, Sonic Residues" symposium, which explored the shared musical heritage of Red Sea communities.
"Red Wind, Coral Worlds" formed part of Jeddah's growing visual arts scene, marked by an increasingly diverse range of artistic practices and creative mediums. The exhibitions and educational programs offered by Hayy Jameel also reflect the role cultural institutions play in connecting contemporary art with heritage and identity, fostering community engagement and cultural exchange, and enriching the city's artistic and cultural landscape.
