Mekaal Club: A Hub of Unique Publications and Cultural Identity
Unique publications are invaluable cultural assets that reflect the history of civilizations and contribute significantly to national identity preservation. Mekaal Club is one of Saudi Arabia's foremost clubs dedicated to preserving and appreciating these distinctive printed works, offering enthusiasts and collectors alike a window into their rich heritage.
Founded by Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Khunaifer as part of the national hobby platform "Hawi," the club focuses on highlighting the cultural significance of rare Arabic prints. Its mission includes raising awareness within the Saudi community about these exceptional pieces and connecting individuals who share a passion for collecting.
The club’s private library, primarily owned by Dr. Al-Khunaifer, houses an impressive archive of over 100,000 items, including vintage books, journals, and a variety of Arabic and international publications. His journey as a collector began over 25 years ago, leading to the establishment of Mekaal Club alongside his colleagues.
Safeguarding Centuries-Old Treasures
Dr. Al-Khunaifer describes these unique publications as “anything printed on paper—whether books, journals, or documents—that dates back around 100 years or more.” He notes that such works hold added value when they carry scholarly or cultural relevance, were printed in limited editions, or include marks of previous owners, such as writers or notable personalities.
Reflecting on the history of the hobby, Dr. Al-Khunaifer, a scholar in cultural and ethical philosophy, shared that collecting significant books has captivated intellectuals globally for centuries. “This hobby has ancient roots. During the Abbasid era, it was known as the art of collecting precious books, which were often beautifully hand-decorated with gold botanical illustrations. Among the renowned collections of that period was the 'House of Wisdom' library, famously recognized in the reign of Caliph Al-Mamun.”

Invaluable Benefits and Cultural Significance
Dr. Al-Khunaifer highlights the diverse benefits of this pursuit, emphasizing four main areas. First, it offers an extensive knowledge base, providing insights into the cultural history of past eras. Second, it preserves the cultural heritage by safeguarding prints from across centuries, making them accessible for researchers. Third, it contributes to academic work, facilitating the reprinting of important texts. Lastly, these publications have substantial scholarly value, as they were meticulously edited by the original authors and reviewed by prominent scholars, setting them apart from modern commercial editions.
Established in 2021 and based in Riyadh, Mekaal Club has grown to over 19 members since launching on the "Hawi" platform, with membership continuing to rise.
Events and Community Engagement
The club frequently organizes gatherings for enthusiasts and hosts cultural events aimed at enriching digital content related to unique publications. Through the national hobby portal "Hawi," a part of the Quality of Life Program under Saudi Vision 2030, the club has overcome many challenges. It has established a strong online presence, streamlined membership management, and facilitated event organization. "Hawi" provides essential resources, from administrative support and venue access to training programs, ensuring hobbyists have clear guidance and support for their interests.
