Camels in Jazan: A Heritage of Coast and Mountain

The livestock sector, a vital component of sustainable rural development and national food security, receives generous support in the Kingdom. In Jazan Region, camels constitute a pillar of both economic activity and cultural heritage, representing an integral and deeply rooted part of the Saudi identity passed down through generations.

The region’s unique environmental diversity, encompassing coastal plains and mountains, creates fertile ground for raising diverse camel breeds, fostering genetic diversity and adaptability. This livestock population, numbering approximately 79,478 according to the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, significantly contributes to the local economy and provides multiple income sources in rural areas.

The market in Ahad Al-Masarihah Governorate is one of the region's largest specialized camel markets, witnessing vibrant economic activity and attracting traders from neighboring areas. This market embodies the vital spirit of rural Jazan and the deep social connection to this national heritage.

For breeders, the relationship with their camels transcends economics; it is an extension of their identity and an emotional connection to the land that shaped their ancestors' lives. Today, this heritage is supported by the state’s vision to preserve and develop national culture. The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture continues to implement projects to enhance the sustainability of the camel sector in Jazan, including breed improvement and veterinary services. This aligns with the Kingdom's agricultural development and bioeconomy objectives, reinforcing Jazan’s position as a key environment for this authentic national resource.
