Aseer Heritage Villages Revive Ramadan Traditions

Heritage villages in Aseer Region are reviving traditional Ramadan customs that emphasize simplicity and social solidarity.

Saeed Al-Wadaei, head of a local heritage association, noted that residents historically relied on local agricultural produce for meals. Iftar and suhoor typically consisted of dates, milk, and coffee, alongside regional staples like bread and ghee, often prepared in simple kitchens using earthenware pots and traditional ovens.

Social bonds remain a cornerstone of these villages, characterized by the exchange of food among neighbors and the hosting of iftar tables at mosques for travelers. Historically, the start of the month was signaled by telegram or word of mouth, triggering increased communal visits.

While daily labor in livestock and agriculture continued during the fasting hours, nights were dedicated to worship and traditional folk games, which fostered a spirit of camaraderie that continues to define the region's cultural identity today.
