Riyadh and Moscow.. Qualitative Development
For four years, the Saudi-Russian relations have been witnessing qualitative developments in many fields and sectors, especially politics and the economy, which have been at the forefront of these relations since Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz came to power and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been the actual booster of these relations until the Kingdom has become the largest foreign investor in Russia today.
The second visit of President Vladimir Putin to the Kingdom, twelve years after his first one, indicates the growth of these relations to unprecedented levels between the two friendly countries. This is confirmed by the remarks of President Putin prior to his arrival in Riyadh yesterday. He asserted that his country views the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a friendly and pivotal country in the region and the world. He also commended the roles of Riyadh on many issues and its positive contributions to the hot topics.
It is difficult to ignore the "economy" while talking about the nature of relations between the Kingdom and Russia, especially since the last two years have witnessed a remarkable growth in the trade exchange between the two countries, by 101%, to reach SR 5.54 billion in 2018, compared to SR 2.8 billion in 2016, an increase of almost SR 2.5 billion. Accordingly, Russia's ranking among countries establishing trade relations with the Kingdom rose to the 36th from the 42nd place in 2017 and the 49th place in 2016.The economic coordination between the two countries has reached its peak when the Kingdom convinced Russia, which is not a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) , and the inception of OPEC +, to reduce its production of oil in order to maintain the oil prices in the global markets, a matter which is welcomed and committed to it by Moscow to this very moment.
Politically, Putin's visit to the Kingdom culminates in a state of full consensus in opinions and attitudes between the two countries towards many of the hot political issues witnessed by the region and the world, and heightens the scale of continuous coordination between Riyadh and Moscow, a matter which serves the discussion of solutions to a number of political files, such as the Syrian file, the security coordination, military and technical file, joint military projects and agricultural sustainability.
Hence, it can be emphasized that the growth of Saudi-Russian relations will never come to an end, and that the future of these relations promising good for the two friendly countries, just because these relations are grounded on the consolidation of friendship and partnership and the development of shared interests, as well as positive bilateral relations serving the interest of their stability. The Saudi-Russian relationship does not serve as an alliance against anyone, a matter that will make this relationship last and develop until all the desired objectives are achieved.
