Wife of imprisoned Qatari royal tells suffering of her husband and children at hands of regime to head of the Middle East Section at the UN Human Rights Commission
Asma Al-Rayyan, the wife of Sheikh Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al-Thani, an imprisoned member of the Qatari royal family upon a 25-year old arbitrarily sentence issued by the Qatari regime, met with head of the Middle East section of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mohamed Nsour, in Geneva last March.
She handed him a complaint related to harsh practices of the Qatari regime against her husband. She confirmed that her husband came back to Qatar after receiving assurance from Qatari authorities to receive his father’s inheritance. Mohamed Nsour expressed his shock at the intransigence of the Qatari regime regarding her children and husband’s case after submitting a complaint to the UN Commission.
Asma Al-Rayyan said that she informed the UN official with the Qatari authorities’ violations against her rights and her children’s ones after submitting a complaint to the UN Human Right Commission last March. She and her children were deprived of meeting and contacting their father in his jail in Qatar. She and her children were also prevented from knowing the latest health developments of their father.
Asma Al-Rayyan added that the UN official had heard from her the magnitude of violations committed by the Qatari authorities in the case, whereas the Qatari authorities rejected the request of Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al-Thani’s wife to appoint a lawyer to defend him. These violations contradict all human rights conventions and laws, whereas every accused person has the right to have a fair trial and a lawyer to defend him.
Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al-Thani’s wife pointed out that she briefed the Human Rights Commission official with all the developments of the case and her children’s suffering because of Qatari authorities’ intransigence and harsh practices. The Qatari judicial authorities issued a heavy judgment against her husband. This represents a violation to the Qatari laws even in the case of accepting the claims of the Qatari regime regarding the financial debts of Sheikh Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al Thani.
Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al-Thani’s wife confirmed that the UN Human Rights Commission official expressed his surprise that the family's situation goes bad after submitting complaint to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Qatari authorities reject to allow the wife and children to contact Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al-Thani in jail even on dates set by the jail administration, the most recent in last Eid al-Adha. She also pointed out that the UN Human Rights Commission official expressed his shock after learning of the way the Qatari sheikh was sentenced. The judgment was issued without a real and fair trial.
Asma Al-Rayyan noted that the UN Human Rights Commission official asked her to provide him with the letter she had received from the Qatari authorities on her husband’s judicial judgment. She also informed the UN official with the intransigence of the Qatari judicial authorities related to the rule of alimony payments to be able to spend her children and herself, whereas the authorities suspended this judgment.
Asma Al-Rayyan said that the UN Human Rights Commission official heard in the meeting about the nature of judicial judgments in the case of Sheikh Talal. She assured him that the judicial decision is arbitrary and unprecedented in Qatar, especially on issues related to financial debts.
Asma Al-Rayyan said that the UN Human Rights Commission official promised to contact head of Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee, Ali bin Sumikh al-Marri to reach a solution to the issue and allow the wife and children of Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al-Thani to contact him in the jail. She also pointed out that the UN Human Rights Commission official asked about the presence of Qatari sheikhs who accompanied her outside Qatar.
The UN official assured her that the UN Commission would contact her in the coming period in order to follow up the case of Sheikh Talal Bin Abdul Aziz Al Thani, her case and remain abreast of the latest developments of the case with the aim of reaching a solution to it with the Qatari authorities and ending the suffering of the family.
